TikTok vs. Biblical Wisdom: 5 Questions to Help Your Teen Spot the Truth

Hey there, friends. It’s David Brunson here. As a pastor and someone who cares deeply about our families here at Grace Journey Counseling, LLC., I’ve noticed something lately that I think we need to talk about. If you’ve got a teenager in the house, you know exactly what I’m talking about. You walk into the living room, and they’re buried in their phone, thumb scrolling at a hundred miles an hour.

Most of the time, they’re watching TikTok. Now, TikTok isn’t all bad, there are some pretty funny cat videos and some great cooking tips out there. But lately, TikTok has become the "go-to" source for mental health advice. From "self-diagnosis" videos to "manifesting your best life," our kids are being flooded with thousands of tiny, 60-second sermons every single day.

The problem is that while some of this advice sounds "right" or feels good in the moment, it doesn't always lead to the deep, lasting healing that comes from God’s grace. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to grab a soundbite and call it truth. But as followers of Christ, we’re called to something deeper. We want our teens to have a foundation that won’t shake when the trends change.

If you find yourself worried about what your teen is soaking in, remember that you aren't alone. We are here to walk this journey with you. At Grace Journey Counseling, LLC., we see counseling not as a sign of weakness, but as a "beacon of hope" and a courageous act of faith.

To help you and your teen navigate these digital waters, I’ve put together five questions based on biblical principles and Christian counseling wisdom. These are meant to be conversation starters, ways to help your teen develop a "filter" of truth.

1. Does this advice align with the heart of God?

The first and most important question we have to ask is: Does this message match what we know about God through His Word? TikTok wisdom often focuses on what makes us feel good in the immediate moment. It tells us to "follow your heart" above all else.

But the Bible gives us a different perspective. Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us that the heart can be tricky. Worldly wisdom says, "Do what makes you happy," but biblical wisdom says, "Seek first the Kingdom of God." When your teen sees a video about how to handle stress or relationships, ask them: "Does this sound like the character of Jesus? Does it encourage kindness, patience, and self-control, or does it encourage selfishness and pride?"

Wisdom is a gift from God. James 1:5 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask Him, and He gives it generously. Encouraging your teen to check a "viral tip" against the Bible is the first step in building a faith-rooted filter.

2. Is this truth, or just a tiny piece of the puzzle?

Social media thrives on soundbites. You can’t explain the complexity of the human soul or the depths of God’s mercy in 60 seconds. One of the biggest dangers of "TikTok Theology" or "TikTok Therapy" is that it takes a tiny grain of truth and strips away all the context.

For example, a creator might use a Bible verse to support a message that is actually the opposite of what the verse means. Or they might give a mental health tip that sounds great but ignores the hard work of healing and restoration.

Help your teen understand that real growth takes time. It’s a journey, not a shortcut. If they’re struggling with big questions about their future, they might need more than a video. They might need a plan. Our programs, like Phase 1: Freshmen - Mapping Your Future, are designed to provide that structured, faith-based guidance that a social media app simply can't offer.

3. Is the goal "Self-Love" or "God’s Love"?

This is a big one. If you spend five minutes on social media, you’ll hear a lot about "self-love," "self-care," and "putting yourself first." While taking care of ourselves is important, and as counselors, we believe self-care is a way to honor the temple God gave us, the TikTok version often stops at the "self."

Biblical wisdom teaches us that we find our true selves when we lose ourselves in Christ. True healing doesn't come from just looking inward; it comes from looking upward. We want our teens to know they are deeply loved by the Creator of the universe. When they understand God’s grace and mercy, they don't have to carry the heavy burden of "perfecting" themselves.

If your teen is feeling the weight of the world, remind them that they don’t have to fix everything on their own. Seeking professional help through our counseling services is a way to allow God’s grace to guide them toward restoration. It’s moving from "self-help" to "God-centered healing."

4. Is this a soundbite or a foundation for life?

Catchy phrases are easy to remember, but they aren't always easy to live by. TikTok wisdom is often like a snack, it tastes good for a second but leaves you hungry later. Biblical truth is like a feast; it sustains you through the darkest valleys and the highest mountains.

Ask your teen: "Is this advice something that will still be true in five years? Does it help you grow into the person God created you to be?"

We see many high school seniors struggling with the pressure to have their whole lives figured out because of what they see online. It’s why we offer specialized support like Phase 5: Seniors - Mastering Your College Applications. We want to replace the "noise" of the internet with practical, calm, and faith-rooted strategies for the next chapter of their lives.

5. Who is the source, and do they really know you?

An influencer with a million followers might look like an expert, but they don’t know your teen’s name, their story, or their heart. They aren't there to hold their hand when things get tough.

Biblical growth happens in community. It happens in the church, in the family, and sometimes, in the counseling room. Content creators cannot disciple our children. They can’t provide the accountability and deep connection that a local community offers.

If your teen is getting all their "wisdom" from strangers on a screen, it’s time to gently nudge them back toward real-life relationships. Remind them that there are people who truly care about their soul. Whether it’s attending a Journey to Grace Spiritual Healing Conference or just sitting down for a family dinner, real connection is where the most healing happens.

Why This Matters

Parents, I know it feels like you're competing with a loud, digital world. It can be exhausting. But remember, your voice still matters. Your presence is a "beacon of hope" in your child’s life.

By asking these questions, you aren't just "policing" their phone; you are teaching them how to discern. You are giving them the tools to spot the truth in a world full of shadows. This is part of the "journey" we talk so much about here at Grace Journey Counseling, LLC.

If you notice your teen is struggling with anxiety, loneliness, or the pressure of social media, please know that reaching out for help is a sign of incredible strength. We offer a safe, user-friendly space where faith and mental health meet. Our online booking system is convenient and accessible, designed to make getting help as simple as possible.

We believe in the power of restoration. We believe that God’s grace is sufficient for every struggle your teen faces. Whether they are a freshman just starting to map out their future or a senior preparing for Graduation Celebration, we want to support them every step of the way.

A Final Word of Encouragement

Trust in the process, and trust in the Lord. Healing doesn't happen overnight, and neither does wisdom. But every time you sit down with your teen and talk through these questions, you are planting seeds of truth that God can grow.

If you find yourself in need of extra support, consider reaching out to us. We’d love to be a part of your family’s journey toward healing and peace. You don’t have to navigate the TikTok age alone. Let’s walk this path together, rooted in the principles of faith and the power of God’s love.
