1. "Where have you seen God’s peace: or felt the lack of it: this week?"

This question shifts the focus from "performance" to "presence." It allows your teen to talk about their stress without it feeling like an interrogation. If they say they haven’t felt God’s peace at all, that’s okay. Respond with empathy: "I hear you. Sometimes it feels like the noise of life drowns everything else out. I've felt that way too." This validates their experience and shows them that struggle is part of the human journey.

2. "I noticed you’ve been carrying a lot lately. How can we pray for your heart tonight?"

Instead of just asking what’s wrong, this acknowledges that you see their struggle. It’s an invitation for them to name their burden. By offering to pray with them and for their heart, you are reminding them that they don't have to carry the weight alone: God is their burden-bearer, and you are their teammate.

3. "Sometimes even the heroes in the Bible felt totally overwhelmed. Do you ever feel like the pressure is just too much to handle?"

This is a great way to integrate Scripture naturally. You can reference how David was honest about his "faint heart" or how Jesus himself felt "sorrowful even to death" in the garden.   • Admit your own struggles: Modeling vulnerability is one of the best ways to encourage it in others. Share (appropriately) about a time you felt anxious or how you rely on God’s grace when you feel like you’ve failed.
